We’re a small charity with a big collection, and an even bigger story to tell.
The Royal Artillery Museum was set up to care for the Royal Artillery’s historic collection, which is one of the oldest and most significant military museum collections in the UK. It tells the story of artillery from Medieval cannon to guided missiles and everything in between, as well as three centuries of the Royal Artillery and the lives of the men and women who have served in the Regiment. You can find out more about Our Collection and the Museum History.
The charity is run by our Board of Trustees. We also have four full-time staff, three part-time staff and a growing team of amazing volunteers who help us with every aspect of our work (please do get in touch with us if you think you might like to Get Involved).
Our Vision, Mission and Strategic Objectives tell you a bit more about our organisation and what we want to achieve.
Following the closure of our previous museum in Woolwich in 2016, the collection was moved into storage while we develop plans for a new museum close to the home of the Gunners at Larkhill in Wiltshire. You can find out more about our plans for the future here.
In the meantime, our team is doing all of the things that most other museums do:
Developing our collection – we continue to acquire objects and documents that tell the story of the Royal Artillery, and the development and use of artillery throughout history;
Caring for our collection – this occupies the greatest amount of our time, and includes cataloguing, research, conservation and restoration, and managing around 1,500 objects from our collection that are on loan to other organisations across the country;
Making our collection accessible – while we’re still working on the plans for our future museum, we’re doing everything we can to make our collection accessible by holding open days, pre-booked group tours and educational visits at our stores near Larkhill, attending events elsewhere and providing more information on our website and social media.
