Kane's List

Kane's List

A published register of Royal Artillery officers, Kane’s List is one of the most frequently used resources in the museum’s collection. It is an invaluable tool for researching the careers of Regular Army officers of the Royal Artillery between 1716 and 1914.

A number of editions were produced throughout the nineteenth century, with the final edition published in June 1914, on the eve of the First World War. The Royal Artillery Museum holds multiple copies of every edition.

The level of detail varies from volume to volume. In the 1900 edition, a typical entry begins with a regimental number (as personal Army numbers were not yet in use), with General Albert Borgard listed as number 1. This is followed by:

  • Dates of birth and promotion
  • Postings and overseas service
  • Orders, decorations, and campaign medals
  • And, where applicable, the date of death

Kane’s List is named after Lieutenant John Kane, who compiled the original version. He was commissioned from the ranks into the Royal Invalid Artillery on 1 July 1799 and became its Adjutant in 1823. In the dedication to the volume, Kane notes he had served for 26 years in the office of the Adjutant General of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, under Lieutenant General John Macleod. He died in Woolwich on 29 August 1834.
