We offer a paid Document Research Service for enquiries about the documents and records in the museum’s archive and library. We are only able to carry out research or answer enquiries under this paid service.

We are sorry but we aren’t able to accept any other enquiries or offer general advice on historical research. However, we have put together some detailed research guides which help with the questions that are most frequently asked, particularly on family history and on researching Gunner units. You can find our research guides here.

We strongly suggest that you look at the research guides before choosing to use the Document Research Service, especially if you are looking at family history. As the research guides make clear, we do not hold many records on individuals, so there are often better archives, museums or online sites to try first.

Our Document Research Service is only for enquiries about the documents in our own collection. We can’t carry out research online or in other archives or museums. If you are looking for someone to help you carry out research more widely, then you might want to see if you can find a professional researcher through the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (www.agra.org.uk).

Document Research Service details:

  • The charge is £30 per hour of research.
  • We can carry out a minimum of one hour’s research, and a maximum of three hours'.
  • We cannot carry out open-ended research requests – we need to know which of our documents you would like us to look through.
  • We can email you copies of our relevant catalogue listings to help you identify documents. We do not charge for this. There is more information on the types of documents in our collection on our page on Visiting the Archives.
  • We can copy up to three pages of documents as PDFs, without extra charge, for each hour of research. If you require any further copies, our usual copying fees will apply.
  • If you are a serving Gunner, or a member of the Royal Artillery Historical Society or the Friends of the Royal Artillery Museum, please speak to us, as we can give you up to two free hours of research a year.
  • This service is aimed at private researchers. If your research is for commercial purposes (including any form of publication), there may be additional charges.
  • If you are from the Royal Artillery or the MOD and are carrying out research for work, please get in touch with us to discuss how we can help you.

If you would like to use our Document Research Service, please contact us at enquiries@RoyalArtilleryMuseum.com or on 01980 634208. Email is preferable, as the Archivist is often working away from the telephone, but you are welcome to leave a message.
